WHEREAS, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ) community in Washington, DC celebrates its pride each year during the month that spans the middle of May through the middle of June, culminating in the Capital Pride Parade and Festival this year, the weekend of June 10 and 11; and
WHEREAS, Washington, DC is, and has long been, a welcoming, sanctuary city for people of all backgrounds and gender identities with among the strongest human rights laws in the country; and
WHEREAS, DC Leather Pride, Capital Trans Pride, DC Black Pride, DC LatinX Pride all take place throughout Pride Month to celebrate and honor the Washington region’s LGBTQ community; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, June 10, 2017 LGBTQ organizations, businesses, allies and supporters will march in the annual Capital Pride parade which begins at 22nd and P Streets NW and ends at 14th & S Streets NW, and on Sunday, June 11, 2017 the community gathers again along America’s Main Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, between 3rd and 7th Streets to gather for the annual Capital Pride Festival and Concert; and
WHEREAS, on Monday, June 12, 2017, I will proudly stand with thousands of LGBTQ Washingtonians, visitors, and allies who will gather in Dupont Circle to affirm continued support for our friends and loved ones in Orlando on the first Anniversary of the Pulse Nightclub tragedy; and
WHEREAS, while the White House may choose to not declare June as pride month, our nation’s capital proudly and resolutely stands to honor those who trailblazed, and continue to, a path towards equality and history:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, THE MAYOR OF WASHINGTON, DC, do hereby proclaim the month of June as "PRIDE MONTH IN WASHINGTON, DC."
