Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiative Announces a Diaper Drive in Partnership With the DC Diaper Bank

Friday, May 1, 2015

Today, the Mayor’s Office on Women’s Policy and Initiative (MOWPI) announces a diaper drive in partnership with the DC Diaper Bank in honor of Mother’s Day. The drive will run between Monday, May 4th, 2015 – Friday, May 29th, 2015.

Diapers are not covered under TANF or WIC programs, and currently in the District, 44% of children under age three live in low-income households. This means that parents are sacrificing necessities like food to offset the high cost of diapers. Diapers cost an average of $12/package, and babies need anywhere from 8-10 diapers per day. The average monthly cost of diapers ranges from $100-$120. When parents are forced to keep babies in dirty diapers or reuse disposable diapers, babies are at heightened risk of infection. According to the DC Diaper Bank, 36% of mothers regularly run out of clean diapers for their infants. Additionally, their increased crying becomes a trigger for stress and subsequent abuse by the parents.

To support the efforts of the DC Diaper Banks and help low income mothers and families care for their children with dignity, MOWPI will keep collection bins in the following District Government building locations:
